Shrouded in Gold

A reliquary (also referred to as a shrine or by the French term châsse) is a container for relics. These may be the purported or actual physical remains of saints, such as bones, pieces of clothing, or some object associated with saints or other religious figures

Warning. If you couldn’t tell from the definition above. This blog is about dead people and bits of dead people at that. So turn away now if you might not like it.

It was some years ago now when I first saw reliquaries, in the Topkapi museum in Istanbul.

I guess I had heard of them before, but until I saw them in person I didn't really have a frame of reference as to how unique they are. The bodies of saints encased in gold, encrusted in gems and believed to have magical properties?

Awesome!

This sounds like something straight out of a fantasy novel.

I mean, look at this one.

It's basically a magic wand. You could imagine a miter-wearing, cassocked bishop wielding this against the hordes of the undead (the irony of his chosen weapon lost on him) and firing bolts of holy lightning from its fingertips.

Ahem.

This is supposed to be a serious post. And seriously, these things are beautiful. Look at the amazing craftsmanship on this foot (the original converse high tops?).

Wars have been fought over these things.

Crusaders brought back hundreds of relics from Jerusalem in those wars which in turn became the center of tourist industries. These relics attracted pilgrims from all over Europe, who of course brought their purses with them.

Such was the power of these reliquaries to bring prosperity to the orders that held them, and their surrounding areas, that it was not unknown for monks to actually steal relics from one church and bring it back to their own.

All of this goes to illustrate how history is such an amazing source of inspiration for my work. That doesn’t mean I’m writing historical fiction (oh boy, I could not handle the stress of trying to be accurate), but things like this just get my brain rolling. Ideas for plot points or scenes just spark from when I see or read about things like this.

That's why in Ioth, City of Lights, which spends a decent amount of time in the titular city, the birthplace of the church of Arloth, I knew that I wanted there to be reliquary.

And not just a part of a long dead holy man, this was going to be the body of their god. Encased in gold forever and the center of their church.

Who was this man who became a god? Well, thats one of the mysteries in Ioth, City of Lights, so I’m not going to spoil it here. But rest assured, it’s going to have pretty major implications for the rest of the Wildfire Cycle.

Before I go, one last picture.

The scariest reliquary I have ever seen.
